The scientific name of the giraffe is Giraffa camelopardalis - &#039;camelopardalis&#039; does mean &#039;camel-leopard&#039;, referring vaguely to the appearance of the animal, and it&#039;s even possible that people many years ago thought it was a camel-leopard hybrid, but this is certainly not the case. For one thing, crossing two different animals does not give you a new, self-sustaining species, it gives you a hybrid, which is usually sterile. For another, only closely-related species can breed in the first place, and camels and leopards are unrelated other than both being mammals.</description>
