Why do some people worry so much about snow leopards and Siberian tigers dying out?

Shouldn’t they show more concern about the hundreds of Nigerian Christians that were macheted to death this past week, or concern about our young soldiers in harm’s way in Afghanistan? Who cares about snow leopards, Siberian tigers and whooping cranes anyway?

because then they will become extinct.

Because we can’t let all these animals die, because of us causing global warming and habitat loss.

I hear ya. It IS sad to have an extinct animal though, esp. bc of over-hunting poaching. Remember the phrase, ‘Love all creatures great & small’ – St Francis. God created animals too, loves them too.

However, in Ontario Canada they want to re-introduce mountain lions in the woods. Helllloooo??!! These really kill people! The re-introduced large numbers of wolves up there and now they are totally out of control killing all the deer and attacking humans.

Animal rights people are out of control, not thinking clearly, worst of all not protecting HUMANS.

Are you unaware that the ecosystem (made up of plants and animals) provides our air, food, and water? Without these things there would not even be Christian Nigerians to be slaughtered in the first place. And may I ask exactly what YOU are contributing to the human race..would the planet suffer much if you were extinct. If you want to look at things from the perspective you are now..we should murder more than half the planet as they contribute nothing to it.

Possibly because they are an apparently easily solved solution, present as warm cuddly benign creatures with minimal recognition or effort attached, and with no on-going long term political/ fiscal/ social obligations.

By “caring” about endangered animals in minute numbers, we assuage our guilt feelings about non-involvement, gain “warm fuzzes” for dispassionate interest, and don’t feel bad for failure.
We can seek solace in: “Well….I tried…”

On the other hand, engagement in endangered human situations are more problematic.
This involves complex assessments of causes, values and “worth”. Politics and presentation (by media and sectional interests) pose quandaries of whom to support, who has validity, who were responsible (were we in some part?), what is the true integrity-bearing solution ?
Perhaps more importantly is the cost: how will our lifestyles be socially/ politically/ financially/ emotionally/ conscience be affected?
Will attempts at intervention mean we can not have that extra TV/ holiday/ small boat/ unnecessary accoutrement to status-inducing comfortable living?
Once engaged, there can be much uncertainty as to continuing involvement obligations. As “Charlie Wilson’s War” illustrated of funding anti-Soviet actions in Afghanistan, the budget rose from $5 million to $500 million for the US . However as the film’s closing sequence states “……. we f*ck ed up the end game” by failing to go the extra $1 million — $5 million. This would have provided for post conflict provision of health/ medical/ education/ infrastructure/ farming subsidies or grants.
The inheritance of such short-sightedness is the Afghan War today.

Becoming embroiled in human conflicts is daunting.
Like making a Will or succession planning, we are confronted with our own mortality: we’d rather not face it.

By avoiding endangered human scenarios we avoid the “cold prickly” feeling of responsibilities in grey areas.
Alternately, animal rescue seems more black and white in actions and results. Meanwhile we can salve our consciences with “it’s not our problem” and “it’s probably their fault anyway” as craven excuses.

You can’t just put yourself above everything else on the planet. Humans have got to be the worst species on the planet. Every other creature has an equal right to live as everyone else.
The soldiers make there own choice to join the military. They know the risks in doing so. Why should I be concerned about them, they are the ones who made the decision.
How could you care about Nigerian Christians but not care about another living creature on this planet. I fcuking hate people who assume that humans are vastly superior to every other animal on the planet and they don’t deserve to live.
You not caring about the well being of another creature is the same as someone not caring about the Nigerian Christians. How would you feel if someone said that they couldn’t care less about Nigerian Christians and that they didn’t care if 5 were killed or 5000 were killed.
So I am going to finish this off by saying this to you. Your lack of respect for other living creatures on this planet, not being concerned about another creatures well being, and not caring less about the millions of animals illegally killed every year, makes you just as bad as the people who stormed these villages. Not in the sense of gruesomely chopping people up, but in the sense of not caring about the life of another creature.
Yes it was a horrible thing what happened, but you can’t put the humans on a pedestal and say we are better then animals, especially considering what we do to our own kind for no obvious reason.

Certainly there are people who don’t care about animals becoming extinct, and there are those who do care. Those who do care realize that extinction is final, and that it is tragic to lose animals to extinction because of human greed. After all, it makes no difference how much money an individual may make during his/her lifetime, because in a few short decades, that individual is going to die and he/she cannot take his/her money with him/her to the grave. King Tut did that, but it only benefits grave robbers. So, what is the point of maknig more money (say billions) than one can possibly spent within one’s life time, especially if some people do it by destroying the environment, endangering wildlife and the health of a lot of people in the process?

Those of us who do care about extinction care because we do not want future generations to be deprived of an opportunity to know the wild animals first hand, instead of having to read about them in books. By the way, I watched a PBS program last night, and the scientists in that program compared investors to cocaine addicts. It turns out that financial investors who were making money were really rewarding their brains with dopamine. This is the same chemical that cocaine users induce in their brains. It would be tragic if we lose animal species to extinctions because some dopamine addicts want to stimulate their brains by making money while destroying wildlife habitats and the environment. Ask yourself what is more important: preserving the environment so that future generations can enjoy nature, or destroy it so a few individuals can get their dopamine fix?
