geneticists, or irresponsible breeders/zoologists conducted an experiment to see what would happen when you hybridize a lion with a tiger. Result is a liger… I believe a Liger is a male lion mating with a female tiger… and a Tigon is a male tiger mating with a lioness. But it could be the other way around.
The science behind it is simple… both felines, so the sperm and egg are compatible. the results are suprising, the animals seem to be massive… up to 700 pounds!
The real purpose was just a curiousity.

Ligers are the offspring of lion and tiger: the offspring that results from breeding a male lion with a female tiger

They exist because they can. Ligers are the biggest of the big cats, but never occur in the wild today, since the ranges of asiatic lions and tigers no longer overlap.
Contrary to some, Ligers CAN breed, but only with male lions or tigers, since only the females are fertile.
They can weigh over 1000 lb

My understanding is that all animals have a growth-inhibitor or growth-maximizer in their genes. When you breed a male lion and a female tiger, the result is an animal that no longer has that growth-inhibitor. So they get very large. I’m not sure this is what you were talking about but I thought it was interesting about the liger and why they get so big.

Because some perverted humans decided to put a lion and a tiger together to see if they would mate.

This could be answered from a negative point of view.
Animals cannot interbreed either because their sexual organs are no more compatible or if they are of different species they just won’t (bit weird for them).
Lions and tigers if left in somewhere closed (caged) however can. They have different chromosome numbers. Their offspring will have an odd number of chromosomes, incorrect. Due to this, their product, ligers, are infertile. That’s the reason.
