I don’t think they’re ‘afraid’ of water, they don’t like the feel of water. Most cats hate it because it makes them feel dirty, and puts their carefully groomed fur out of place!! But it’s not true of all cats; I once had a cat who learned to turn the bath-taps on and he would stand in the bath loving the feel of the water round his paws! (R.I.P. Tim!) I know other cats who love water, too.
I am not 100% sure but there are some domestic cats that actually love water. Just look on youtube! lol I have a cat that likes to play in water and is immune to punishment by means of ‘water gun’ because he likes it. I have had and been around many cats and he is the only one that seems to relish play with water, but they do in fact exist. Actually, wild large cats such as lions, are not known for being in love with water either. If you were to try and submerge one in water for a bath for instance, chances are pretty high that they would object, strongly! Wild cats are more likely to approach water because it is in their natural environment and they are more used to it. They are around oceans and have to stay out in sudden downpours of rain sometimes, so it is something that they accept as a part of life but it does not necessarily mean it is their ‘cup of tea’. Great question!
Like others said, not all cats hate water and I think a big part of it is that, other than drinking water, cats aren’t used to water. My cat sometimes tries to play with the toilet water when it’s flushed and occasionally jumps in the shower when it’s running. But she HAAAAATES being submerged in water in any way. So that might be part of it too.
Some cats just dont like the way it makes their fur feel. Its all heavy and icky, and they feel like they are dirty. Some cats dont mind it though. My cat hates it. They are not so much afraid of it as they just dont like it.
It’s not necessarily that they are afraid of water, but more that they really aren’t adapted to being in water. And some domestic cats do thoroughly enjoy playing with their water bowls, or even batting at the shower water or swirling toilet water.
are tigers really house cats tigers are a different breed of cats and house cats have a certain type of skin that water feels bad for them and there skin and that is why the house cats dont like water!!!
most cats are, except Turkish Vans. I think it’s just a cat thing because they can actually swim if they have to.
some domestic cats are afraid and feeling disgusting about water because they feel cold
