A tigon is the offspring of a male tiger and female lion, whilst a liger is the offspring of a male lion and female tiger. Tigons are often smaller than their parents, whilst ligers tend towards gigantism and are usually larger than their parents. As with most hybrids, both are nearly always sterile, but occasionally a female will be fertile and can be bred back to one of the parent species, producing:
Tigon + tiger = ti-tigon
Tigon + lion = li-tigon
Liger + tiger = ti-liger
Liger + lion = li-liger
Incidentally, none of these animals are ‘made’ by scientists. They are bred by housing the different species together, often from a young age, so that when the female comes into heat, she will mate with the male. Reputable zoos frown on the breeding of such hybrids for the amusement of human beings.

In response to Yagoubidris’s answer, the offspring of a male horse and female donkey is called a hinny, not a jennet.
I believe the tigon is a male tiger & female lion, the liger is a male lion & female tiger. And I think it actually makes a difference, which is why there are two names, but I’m not 100% sure.
The male is usually put first.
The Tigon would be a male Tiger and a female Lion.
A Liger is a male Lion and a female Tiger.
Its like Brad and Angelina making Brangelina.
Tigon = Tiger (male) +lion (female).
Ligon + Lion (male) + tiger (female).
Just like:
Jennet = Horse (male) + donkey (female).
Mule = Donkey (male) + horse (female)
i like ligers
