If you are flying in from overseas and landing in Jo’burg, I would agree with GualalaMaMa about Pilanesberg. Also if you are flying in from overseas, one day will not be enough – it never is for non Africans. It is huge! Maybe get yourself a B & B in Rustenburg or stay at one of the camps right at Pilanesberg – there are hotel accommodations right in the park. http://www.pilanesberg-game-reserve.co.z…
Kruger is a long drive but you can fly into Polokwane or Phalaborwa which are closer. If time is in short supply, it would be better to stay at a place like Kapama and take one of the morning game drives – the odds of seeing lions are greater because it is a much smaller area than Kruger which is also huge, and they have excellent guides who can find just about anything.http://www.kapama.co.za/_en/default.htmlhttp://www.krugerpark.co.za/
As someone mentioned, there are zoos but seeing a lion in a zoo and spotting one at a reserve are two very different things. I strongly suggest the game reserves over the zoo
Your best bet is to search for tour agent that would guide you through Africa. Perhaps you could start from GoAbroad.com’s Eco Travel Directory for African Safari at http://www.adventuretravelabroad.com/sou…
As of the time of my search, they got 60 programs/tour operators for South African Safaris. Do check them out! You can start checking on previous participants’ experience (it’s in the light blue “speaking logo”).
Good luck!
GA
Kruger is farther away than 3 hours. I would go to Pilanesberg – it is a couple of hours outside of Johannesburg. Very wild. Very authentic bush feeling. Lovely place. Lots of lions, elephants, hippos etc.
Hey! your best bet would be the Kruger Nasional Park more or less an good 3hour drive from Johannesburg. Most citys have zoos where youl find lions and believe me they are everything but taimed!!!
Good luck!
Yeah, the zoo’s…
WHERE IN AFRICA? Its a huge continent with many countries in it! Which place in Africa are you referring to?
Do you want the long list or the short list ?
