What is a Liger

Liger Photo

The liger is a cat born from the breeding of a male lion and a female tiger. This combination produces an offspring with more lionistic features than if the reverse pairing had occured. That would produce a more tigeristic creature known as a tigon. Both are members of genus Panthera. There is no scientific name assigned to this animal because of it’s human assisted ancestory.

A liger looks like a giant lion with muted stripes but like thier tiger ancestors, ligers like swimming. This goes against the nature of a lion but is what makes creature special. It gets the best of both parents. That is not always the case though with crossbreeds. Sometimes the results go the other way and the animal gets the worst of both parents. That would suck!

  1. Liger pictures are cool. They look like a cross between the two but each one has it’s own style.

  2. Peer Gynt Says:

The Liger and Tigon do not have species names because they are sterile. Offspring of two closly related species are usually sterile. One of the main classifications of a species is that the members of a certain species can create viable (non-sterile) offspring. This is why radically dissimiliar dogs are still all dogs yet tigers and lions are different species.

  3. I think that only the males are sterile. The females can breed to produce li-ligers and ti-tigers and things like that.

  4. Tony Photoz Says:

    YEa right!
I caught you a delicious bass also!

  5. tabbie nicole Says:

    ligers are so freakin hott

  6. This is unnatural!

  7. I think that the Ligers are very interesting.

  8. Wth…Breeding animals which are not supposed to be bred. It is VERY unethical. Geez.. obviously it’s cool but haven’t u ever thought about the consequences??? Tigers and lions are already very endangered and yet u still want to have fun and experiment??? I wonder what’s gotten into u crazy people. And in the near future ur grandchildren will ask: Where have all the tigers and lions gone?? Hmm.. I wonder what u will say. Oh… there are still tigons and ligers which can’t breed and will die in a couple of years!! Haha, if u can experiment with tigers and lions, scientists should experiment with u. Go cross-breed urself with a chimpanzee or an orang utan. I wonder what will the offspring be like.

  9. da male ligers are steril u freak!!

  10. you r right liger. you know you love me oh yes!

  11. Liger should not be created they were not made by good there for the should not exist its not a good thing they are too big

  12. Napoleon Dynamite Says:

    It’s a Liger, whaddaya think?!

  13. haha noice I love them things

  14. holy shizer those things are huge. i didnt think they actualy existed

  15. like flippen sweet.i guess nepolian was right

  16. I love ligers, tigons, jaglions, and all of those wild cat mixed breeds, except for the jagulep, it’s not very cute. I want to get a li-liger or a liger or a jaglion when I get older and save up enough money. I wonder if people cross-breed panthers with pumas. That would probably turn out to be very cute if the mother in a panther. But then again that probably wouldn’t work out so well.

  17. this is cool website

  18. your weird

  19. My good friend luke smith loves these kind of cats escpecially theier bum hole. he has a cat of his own and has much fun with it. he has a great bond with cats and there bums

  20. those ligers are so ugly

  21. lllllllllllllll Says:

it has a fat face!!! lol!!! i love it

  22. I think some sicko is messing with nature, I watch many wildlife shows. Lions and Tigers are not commonly known to breed. They may both belong to the cat family, but something is wrong. These type of animals would have existed a long time ago if they had been mating by themselves. Not with the help of Humans!

  23. I think cross breeding these animals is not only wrong, but also twisted and sick. I think it should be banned. I’m surprised the humane society hasn’t been able to stop this atrocity. C’mon people. Where is your sense of morality?? I’m saddened to see these proud animals being forced into this unnatural & grotesque state. This site is perverted and wrong.

  24. befor you post anything do your research. if you look at genetics,it would be more humain to cross a human with a chimp. these thigs dont happen on acedint because lions and tygers dont cross paths in the wild .if you dont beleave me go to bigcatrescuew.com maby you will learn somthing.this site should be shut down . no my englesh is not verry good yet,but i do know what it is i speek of. we should not play god for in doing so we do what it is the devial wants.

–True in other words a liger or a tigon cannot have kids, so their can never be a full liger or tigon family, and therfore there couldnt be a species.

  26. Moonshade Says:

Breeding ligers my be funny and intresting as long as the animals do not suffer about it. But tigers are a highly endangered species and it doesn’t make any sense for their surviving when they are crossbred with lions. It would be better all those tigresses would give birth to true tigers to save their species.

  27. Matthew Whitemore Says:

Hi, I am personally enthrawled by the making of ligers and the general freaks of the cat world: “Tigons”. I have tried making myself a liger from my house cat’s sperm and cat i found on the road egg cells. At the moment the sibling in question has no fur and eyes are a dull colour. Personally, the cat is being used as a football and i feel that it enjoys its consistent abuse. Write to me about this and i will be happy to show you the freak in question.

  28. Matthew Whitemore Says:

im sorry about that, atm i am sitting next to a corss between a sheep and a human

  29. man that awsome i so cant get over it wicked

  30. Only if two ligers bred to make another liger do they classify as a species.

  31. ligers rule! they are formed when a tiger and a lion have babies! :)

  32. Akshay Ranjiv Dev Says:

ligar is one of my favourite animal in this world.

  33. wow! I LOVE tigers and lions but this id BETTER!!! the pic could be more close up though! Any way keep mixbreading those lions and tigers!
    (Make a new population!)

  34. why are ligers not nationally known?

  35. thatz hott mixed with a tiger nd a lion but how it is amazin

  36. I think they are the most beautiful animals on earth. It’s sad though to learn they are sterile.

  37. are these animals real????

  38. what the hell!!!? hahahahahhaha thats funny!! does it works only between lions and tigers? Or can you get something like a “Panthion” or a “Leoger”!!!? that would be stunning!!!

  39. that is one ugly thing i dont even think that is an animal

  40. I am an Animal Management student and I think that interbreeding these two species needs to stop. Both species are endangered and with cross breeding them it declines their nature genes. In the wild one would not see these two interbreeding. They might not live in the same region now, but they did years ago and still they never interbred. Keeping lions and tigers in zoos is only for conservation reasons and should be kept that way. Not for interbreeding. It needs to stop. Non of this is natural. Its just a stupid way for zoos to make money and gain customers and fame. A whole lot of crap!

  41. i did not think ligers were real becacse my class said that they were real but my art teacher said that they are not real soi belived my art teacher but now i know that they are real.

  42. I like ligers, but they are un godly and dont breed in the wild. They only breed in captivity because of man kind, because the put the lion and the tiger in the same enclosure

  43. I like ligers, but they are un godly and dont breed in the wild. They only breed in captivity because of man kind, because the put the lion and the tiger in the same enclosure

  44. well a Liger is a mixed breed the father is a lion and the Mother a tiger know i dont know why that would make a diffrence or even if it would a liger is around twelve feet tall and nine hundred pounds

  45. at the heavier body wieght, are the Ligers as nimble as their partents ?

  46. is this a true story? as lions want to kill tigers so this may not be true.

  47. Is it the Tiger is male and the Lion is female?
I think it is the Liger
When it is a female Tiger and a male Lion I think it is a Tigon

  48. What is a Liger? It’s just like my favorite animal ever.

  49. Ryan LeClaire Says:

HI a am ryan leclaire i am an expert at the ligers i ahve been studying them for several hudnred years now and iw ould like to say they are my favorite aminal

  50. I may be a 5th grader but I’m doing a report on Ligers, Lijaguleps, Lepons, Wolphins and Tigons. So who ever says that are insaine!

  51. Whats a liger? Just one of the freakin’ awesomest animals ever!

  52. Enough of this already! Science has already proven that interbreeding is doable. The fact that ligers and ligons are sterile means interbreeding should not go any further because it is a useless and cruel practice. Experimenting with no actual objective in sight is cruel. If the sole objective is to be able to show the hybrids as a circus animal, then that is not ethical. Creating freaks of nature is absolutely unethical. The Humane Society should ban and discourage this practice and encourage our lawmakers to pass a law prohibiting this useless practice. If these were humans, they would have been banned ages ago. How would you like to see a public display of an autistic child or a child with a cleft lip eating?

  53. you ever heard of a mule? thats exactly the same thing, but between a horse and a donkey ^^
never heard anyone complaining about that, so why dont you all accept the liger for what it is: a living creature!!

  54. i think that the breeding of lions and tigers to create ligers an tigons shouldnt be done as when they are mated the offspring are sterile so the species cannot thrive. at the end of the day thats mother natures way of saying this is wrong. they may look magnificent but i think it has gone too far we now are messing in mothernatures genepool when we shouldnt one day she will bite back and something bad will happen and we will suffer the consequences. on the other hand lions and tiger are the planets most magnificent big cats and we should treasure their existence and thank god for giving us such precious creatures. we shouldnt be abusing them we should be saving them from extinction its our fault they are going extinct and i am one of thousands of people who is helping towards them being saved i think some people should think about the animals welfare and genetic traits. and sign up to save the true species of lion and true species of tiger
thanks hope you enjoyed reading my thoughts rachael.
