What Are Types Of Wild Cats? Other Than Tiger, Lion, Jaguar, Panther, Cheetah, White Tiger, Lynx, Ocelot.?
Filed in Category Cheetahs
First of all, I’d like to point out that there’s no actual species called a panther – that’s just the name commonly given to melanistic leopards (that is, leopards with an excess of the dark pigment melanin, resulting in an almost totally black coat). White tigers are also not a different species or subspecies to normally-coloured tigers – they’re just Bengal tigers with a genetic condition called leucism, which results in reduced pigmentation.
The animals in the family Felidae, the cat family, are as follows:
African golden cat
Andean mountain cat
Asiatic golden cat
Bay cat
Black-footed cat
Bobcat
Bornean clouded leopard
Canadian lynx
Caracal
Cheetah
Chinese desert cat
Clouded leopard
Cougar (also called puma, mountain lion, etc.)
Domestic cat
Eurasian lynx
Fishing cat
Flat-headed cat
Geoffroy’s cat
Iberian lynx
Iriomote cat
Jaguar
Jaguarundi
Jungle cat
Kodkod
Leopard
Leopard cat
Lion
Marbled cat
Margay
Ocelot
Pallas’s cat (also called manul)
Pampas cat
Rusty spotted cat
Sand cat
Serval
Snow leopard
Tiger
Tiger cat (also called oncilla or little spotted cat)
Wildcat (the European wildcat, African wildcat and Asiatic desert cat are all subspecies of this species)
Note that some people classify the three lynxes as subspecies of a single species, whilst others classify them as three distinct species.
