What Are Some Wild Cat Hybrids?

Filed in Category Tigons

Other than pumapard, liger, tigon, or an onza. And what you say, please explain what it is a mix of. Also, what is an onza a mix of? I have heard many things, jaguarundis, cheetahs, and pumas, but what is an onza? Thank you.

There are Jaguleps (jaguar/leopard hybids), ocelot/pumas, Jagulions and leopard lions have been bred, and there is a reported leopard/tiger hybrid in India. Oh they found out the Onza is just a kind of Puma with dna tests, but you want my opinion I think it kind of has the body build of a cheetah.

If you are asking if they occur in the wild, there are no big cats that interbreed in natural settings. It is only during captive settings where there are no other breeding partners would this occur without insemination. Personally, I don’t see any reason to create these types of hybrids. Big cat species suffer worldwide from habitat loss, poaching, and exterminations by ranchers. We should concentrate resources on conservation and strengthening wild species. These hybrids should never be released to the wild, and generally big cats are expensive and require too much care to keep as private pets. They are dangerous, even to keepers they love because of their strength and agility. A playful swipe of a paw could do a lot of damage. They also bring attention away from dire needs of the wild species.

Not all wildcats can interbreed…only the most closely related ones having the same number of chormosomes can. Cheetahs are actually not very closely related to ANY other wildcat and are placed in their own genus. The onza was thought not to he a hybrid at all..but a subspecies of cougar/puma. There have been some hybrids created for the pet industry. The Savannah is a cross between an African serval and a domestic cat. The Bengal is an exotic-looking domestic cat breed which originated from mating Asian Leopard Cats with domestic cats. The Chausie is the result of a mating between a jungle cat and a domestic cat. Safaris are a Geoffroy’s cat/domestic cat hybrid.
