You have it the wrong way round. A liger is the offspring of a male lion and female tiger, whereas the offspring of a male tiger and female lion is called a tigon. In naming hybrids, the father’s species generally forms the first part of the name, and different names are given because, due to the way certain characteristics are inherited, you can end up with quite different animals depending on which species was which parent. For example, ligers are much larger than tigons due to the way the growth gene is inherited – they are usually larger than either of their parents, whilst tigons tend to be smaller or at least no larger than their parents.

Male lion + female tiger = Liger
Male tiger + female lion = Tigon
Ligers tend to become enormous and dwarf their parents reaching nearly 1,000 pounds on average. This is because the growth inhibiting gene(which stops the offspring from growing) exists in the female lion and the male tiger, and since male lions and female tigers don’t have it their offspring will end up growing at a fast and nearly unstoppable rate. Tigons tend to be small and suffer dwarfism because both it’s parents have growth inhibitors.
