Is there such a thing as a “Liger”

is it really possible to cross a lion with a tiger? and which one is the mother? I suppose they have to use invitro fertilization.. but i heard that Paris Hilton had one of these “Liger” cubs, as they are called.. is this real?

    Yes, they are definitely real.
It’s a cross between a male lion and a female tiger. The other way around is called a tigon. You can read about it here:

    There’s a picture, too.

    Hope that helps!

Yes, it is. I saw a newspaper article on them a while back, so it must be true. I think that they can mate naturally too.

for a liger, the mother is a tiger and the father is a lion. there used to be one at the zoo where i live. another one is when the father is a tiger and the mother is a lion, which is called a tigon. they look about the same.

Yes, I suggest looking up Ligers on google you will find sites of zoo’s that have ligers. I doubt Paris Hilton had or has a liger. They are NOT pets, they are much bigger than a lion and a tiger, some can be longer than 7 feet. Ligers are not pets, they are as wild as tigers, lions and bears (OH MY…just a little joke from Wizard Of Oz)

    Hope this helps

Yes,there is one down the road from me at an animal sanctuary. I think the father is the Lion and the mom is the Tiger, and then “Tigons” are the product of a male Tiger and a female Lion.

A liger is the offspring of a male lion and female tiger. The offspring of a male tiger and female lion is called a tigon. Neither are produced through in vitro – the lion and tiger are simply housed together, often from a young age, so that when the female comes into heat she will mate with the male. Reputable zoos frown on this practice, since these hybrids take up space and resources that could better be used to breed endangered species.

Ligers tend towards gigantism and usually grow larger than their parents, whilst tigons are often smaller or at least no bigger than their parents. Like most hybrids, both ligers and tigons are nearly always sterile, but occasionally a female will be fertile and can be bred back to one of the parent species, producing:

    Liger + lion = li-liger
    Liger + tiger = ti-liger
    Tigon + lion = li-tigon
    Tigon + tiger = ti-tigon
