Is It True That There Are No More Elephants, Zebras, Lions And Tigers Left In The Wild?

Filed in Category Tigers

The only ones not in zoos are those on safaris where people pay to see them in a kept park, but none actually live in the wild. This was on a documentary I watched, showing how they are all hunted away.

A national park is very different from a safari park. Animals in protected areas (e.g. national parks) are still wild animals. And there are plenty of those animals outside of protected areas, too, but they are at a higher risk of being hunted.

No, this is not true. Tigers are certainly endangered, and lions are sadly heading that way too (though many people don’t know about this as it seems to get much less media attention), but they still exist in the wild. Their populations could even recover if hunting and habitat loss were better controlled. There are thousands of zebras all over Africa, and though elephants are endangered in some areas, in others they have to be culled because there are too many. In Botswana a few years ago, I saw mile after mile of forest that had been decimated by elephants, destroying the habitat of numerous other species.
You may be confused by the terms ‘national park’ or ‘game reserve’. These are protected areas where hunting is not allowed, but the animals are still wild – they are not fed or fenced in or anything like that. People often go to these areas on safari because they are more likely to see animals there – there are more of them, since hunting is illegal. However, these animals still exist outside these areas, and there is nothing to stop the ones in reserves leaving them and entering an area where they are not protected.

The animals in National parks are about as in the wild as you are going to get. They are still managed to a certain amount.
Cold hard fact is they are sometimes culled (Thin the herd by killing the weak and elder) this helps with over population causing starvation in lean years. There are a few other places where they roam free but are often captured and killed if they encroach on civilization.

No, this isn’t true for elephants, zebras, and lions. I’ve been to Africa, and we never entered any parks where we had to pay to get in. Most of the animals do live on reserves, but they are not fenced in or taken care of. There is simply more of them on the reserves because they are safe from hunters there; however, they can be found out of the reserves as well.
