Do male donkeys have romantic feelings for mares?

The result of their love-making is a mule. I always wondered about sexual attraction between cross-species;
lion + tigress = liger
Wolf + Female dog = Wolf-dog

    The term “feelings” may be misleading. With animals, sexuality is largely hormonal. When a female equine (horse, donkey, mule) is “in heat” she is producing the right hormones for breeding. Male equines can smell these hormones which will trigger breeding responses in the male. Romance (sorry to say) has nothing to do with it.

    Any species primarily regulated with hormones will mate with a similar species producing that hormone. Dogs and wolves are essentially the same species. Lions and tigers are closely related and produce very similar hormones. Same with the horses and donkeys.
